Volunteers are at the heart of Let’s Feed Brum.
Whatever type of volunteering you do, you’ll be led through the process by a Team Leader and our experienced volunteers. Ongoing support is key to being a Let’s Feed Brum volunteer; you can always seek advice and assistance from fellow volunteers, your Team Leaders, and the Board of Trustees. Never be afraid to ask!
We also hold regular volunteer training sessions and socials, which we hope to see you at!
Volunteering Opportunities
Our volunteering opportunities are varied, and they adapt to suit the needs of those we help.
Currently, our main volunteering activities are:
– Daytime organisation of supplies at the LFB Hub
Helping to sort and organise our hub, which includes replenishing supplies for teams, preparing packs for those in need, organising clothing donations, making snack packs for breakfast events and walkabouts, cleaning and maintaining the LFB Food Truck, and general cleaning of the hub.
– Evening walkabout teams, every Monday-Sunday
From around 5.30pm-8.30pm, being part of our outreach teams. You will be handing out food, drinks and essential supplies across Birmingham city centre and key areas out-of-town, and having conversations with people out on the streets.
– Weekly Breakfast events, every Tuesday and Thursday
From 9.30am-12.30pm, joining our team at Birmingham Cathedral, where you will be serving food and drinks, and handing out clothing donations and essential supplies. This is a great place to have conversations and also meet some of the key services operating in the city.
– Monthly clothing events
On Wednesdays from 9.30am-12.30pm at different hostels and refuges in Birmingham, joining the team and the LFB Food Truck to serve hot food and drinks, and handing out clothes and supplies.
All volunteer activities have trained team leaders who will guide and support you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions as we want everyone to feel comfortable and confident in what they’re being asked to do.
FAQs
Let’s Feed Brum is a volunteer-led organisation and without people like you we couldn’t help our friends on the streets. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience, where you get to become part of a real family. It’s also great for your CV too!
There is no pressure to commit to volunteering regularly – we appreciate that not everyone can.
Some people choose to come every week (or sometimes more than once a week), some choose to do different nights as and when they can, and some only come out once or twice. All of these options are absolutely fine, so don’t worry that you’re suddenly making a big commitment or won’t be welcomed if you can’t commit. We always need help and will happily welcome anyone who wants to join us!
Every LFB volunteer is supported with informal training from a team leader during their first few sessions. You will receive a copy of our Volunteer Handbook, which includes guidance that helps you better understand the charity and your important role. If you’re part of the outreach teams, you’ll also receive a lanyard that gives instant access to key information and signposting. In addition, we run regular training sessions and volunteer socials.
We don’t ask for references, but we do ask all volunteers to complete a short application form so that we can capture your contact details, an emergency contact, and find out any other skills that you have that you might want to lend to the charity. For some volunteering opportunities, DBS checks may be required but these will be specific to each role and not for general outreach or hub support.
It doesn’t cost you anything to volunteer, but you are responsible for your own travel costs. Let’s Feed Brum does reimburse relevant out-of-pocket expenses, so please discuss this with your team leader in advance.
The nature of our work, especially with on-street volunteering, can be unpredictable. We are happy to explore under 18s joining us, but please get in touch before applying as we need to ensure that a responsible adult accompanies every volunteering session and is fully aware of how we operate before coming out.
